<International Circulation>: The Lancet forum was held together with the International Symposium on Hypertension and Related Disorders, what do you think of the journal’s collaboration with researchers and health professionals in China?
Dr. Summerskill:This is part of an ongoing engagement between the Lancet family of journals and researchers, commissions, and policymakers in China. As part of this, there have been a number of Lancet/Elsevier workshops for authors and researchers over the last couple of years. We launched in Beijing three weeks ago the Lancet series on Health System Reform in China. We have another major conference planned to follow that up for next year. So, we look upon this meeting as part of a journey on which the Lancet wishes to work with researchers and physicians in China towards the goal of better health care.
<International Circulation>: You recently oversaw the Lancet Series on Health System Reform in China. What are the reasons for Lancet to focus on China Health System Reform?
Dr. Summerskill:This comes at a time when the world is focusing on China in all aspects, when China‘s dominance and emergence in so many areas is becoming clear, and when the opportunities of participation are increasing. So it’s natural that like other international medical journals, the Lancet is interested in health care in China. The particular impetus for this issue was stimulated by the obvious need for reform in the health system. The Chinese people themselves have been complaining that it was too difficult and too expensive to see a doctor and the quality of care is too unreliable. This has been borne out by the government阵 release a month ago of proposals for reforms in health care. And, the bold and unusual step for public consultation, signaling just how important the issue is, and just how valuable it is to understand all the aspects involved. So, our series is designed to help inform those decisions, and to provide the baseline by which future improvements to the health system can be monitored and compared.
